How The 10 Most Disastrous Upvc Replacement Door Handles Mistakes Of All Time Could Have Been Prevented

UPVC Replacement Door Handles

Over time, the handles on your doors will wear out and need to be changed. It is crucial to keep the same dimensions as the handles that were previously used when replacing them.

The three measurements to check are the top screw's location the lever and key hole sizes. Check the size guide for assistance with this.

Inline Lever/Lever

A lever handle or lever is a modern door handle designed to work with new or replacement doors. This style door handle is offered in a wide range of styles & finishes. A number of manufacturers make this handle, including Avocet ERA, Fullex, Hoppe, Mila, Millenco & Yale.

Fab and Fix Windsor Inline Sprung Lever Door Handle

The door handles of uPVC/Composite are made of robust materials and are ideal for multi point lock doors which require a robust design. The handles are inline and operate with the same spindle as well as screw fixings. They can be easily incorporated into doors made of uPVC/Composite, either new or old.

The handle can be placed and angled to suit any user. The handle has been tested for endurance up to 200,000 cycles. This helps to ensure that the finish is of high quality and performance over time. The sprung lever can also be cut to fit a wider range of locks. This is particularly useful in doors with smaller door frames in which the cylinder is further back. A shorter lever can be used for doors with a latch that can be activated with the thumb located on the inside.

Lever Pad

A Lever Pad door handle made of upvc functions differently to the lever type handles on doors. These handle types can either use a single spindle (inline) or independently from both sides using two offset spindles or inline (pad). They are generally used on UPVC double glazed doors. They come in many variations & styles.

The handles have been tested to the minimum of 200k cycles and are available in a variety of finishes like White, Silver, Chrome & Gold. The finish is BS EN 1670 Grade 5 and is resistant to rust. This gives the handle a high performance and durability for its intended purpose.

All UPVC levers for handles come with a spindle, screws and can be installed on the uPVC door.  door handle repairs  allow for a wider handle, which is often a benefit when replacing an old or damaged multi-point door lock mechanism. These handle levers are also spring-loaded, which solves the issue of handles hanging from their horizontal position when they are not being used.

It is important to ensure that the PZ dimensions for both the multipoint lock as well as the uPVC doors when selecting the replacement UPVC spindle and handle. This measurement is often called the  handle centre or 'cylinder centres' and is a critical aspect in ensuring that you have the appropriate handles.

After you have identified the correct PZ size and the correct PZ size, you must ensure that the push and lever pads are shaped to match the American with Disabilities Act compliant handles that you need for your door. These are typically round or square with an internal lever, and an external push pad.

The majority of UPVC lever pads we sell are sprung, meaning that they will return to their horizontal position after not in use, rather than hanging out and possibly sticking in the frame. This keeps draughts out of the property. You will also find that the majority of UPVC lever pad handles are handed which allows you to place them on either side of the door.

Euro Cylinder

Cylinder locks can be found on uPVC and other types of doors. Cylinder locks are operated by a key which unlocks the cylinder case. This exposes pins that can be aligned with the pins in the lock, allowing them to turn the revolving camera, thereby opening the door. Euro Cylinders are available with up to six pins. Internal and external doors require different levels of security.

The choice of cylinder is essential. It depends on the type of use your doors and handles receive. External doors, for instance, should be fitted with cylinders that are more secure, whereas doors inside can be secured using a standard cylinder. Certain cylinders come with extra features that can increase security, such as anti-drill or anti bump properties.

To ensure that the euro cylinder is of the right size for your door, it must be measured accurately. The cylinder must be measured from the central screw hole to the ends of the cylinder. This includes the thumb turn, in the event that one is present. If you are unable to measure with the lock in position, you can remove it. It is crucial to ensure that there is no cylindrical lock that extends beyond the handle or escutcheon. This can make it vulnerable to snapping lock attacks.

The majority of modern cylinders have been designed with anti-drill and bump resistance features included in their design. They are designed to decrease the chance of attack by forcing cylinders to rotate in a new direction. This can help deflect the attack, and ensure your door is secure.

Some cylinders are designed to resist snapping. This is a common occurrence on cylinders. A special tool is used to break the break line of the lock and the front of the cylinder is snapped off. This is faster and less difficult than opening the door with multipoint locks and leaves little evidence of a break-in, which can hinder the insurance claim.

Spring Cassette

The spring cassette is situated inside the base plate of the door handle. It is a spring-loaded solution to return your multipoint lock handles back to their original position after use. In the past, a lot of these types of handle did not have a spring built into them, and without it they are more likely to slide or  drop once the locking mechanism is disengaged. This simple part is the most effective way to fix this problem. It also stops your upvc door from becoming stuck in the open or closed position as they aren't easy to close manually.

These spring cassettes have been specifically designed to be used with multipoint locks sprung but they won't work with non-sprung multipoint handles. You will need to have a custom hole cut into your backplate to allow these to fit (please look at the image for a technical diagram). They are a replacement for broken or missing cassettes within the backplates of door handles of many kinds of uPVC doors. They are sold as one unit. They come with a square cut out that accommodates an 8mm shaft.

These spring cassettes are a great value-for-money way to fix the problem of your door handles sliding. They are simple to put in and will increase the life span of your uPVC doors.
